"Snow Days"

I always think it would be nice to live somewhere warm or maybe a place with a little more pizazz when it comes to outdoor scenery but every time a new season approaches, I'm excited. I like the "change" of pace and all of the things "to do" with a season.

Spring brings warmer weather and allows us to finally do outside activities and enjoy all the new blooms. Can't forget baseball too. Summer allows us fun activities in the sun and long nights of playing outside. Fall has a beautiful scenery with football and bonfires and pumpkin carving. While winter can give us bitter cold weather and a few snowy activities outside, to me it means that we can stay put inside. I enjoy being home and hanging out. The kids and I in lougne clothes, playing with their toys, getting projects done, introducing a new craft project to the kids, catching up on laundry/household work, taking a good nap, drinking hot tea in the afternoon...it's nice to have the "excuse" to not go out. I don't like taking the kids out unless I have to when it's really cold. I know it's not for everyone but I like the feeling of being "snowed in." I guess it takes the pressure off me as far as errands go and the kids and I have all sorts of fun!

On the nicer winter days, we have enjoyed a few inside activities. After the holidays, there isn't a lot going on it is kinda nice to just slow down.

I took Nora to Barnes and Noble for the first time by herself and boy did she have a blast! Being my book worm, she was in heaven when we walked in! After we got a snack and a drink, she "read" so many books while we were there. She even started up a conversation with a boy. I heard her ask him his name and then she pointed to me and said "That's my Mom and I'm me."  She usually introduces herself as Sissy Nora so it was cute:) It was fun to see her interact with someone she doesn't know and made me realize we are not around a lot of kids her age. After leaving she told me how much fun she had and left me wondering why I hadn't done that sooner? Between moving and the holidays, we have been so busy and it's nice to slow down. That's what I love about January and February, it's just not as busy around our house.

The kids and I also made a trip to the mall after we picked Nolan up from school. We basically had the whole mall to ourselves. It was the first time I had taken them there without a stroller by myself. The parking lot part still scares me (mainly due to the motion doors in and out of the mall...Nolan kept running) but definelty doable! I let the kids play on the riding toys, walk around, went on the carousel ride at the shoe store, cookies and an icey and the highlight of the afternoon...the elevator or as Nolan calls it "the machine". We ran into one of my friends and her little boy so Nolan asked if they wanted to come for a ride and all three kids were screaming when they got off! Ahhh...the little things that make them happy:) we stayed and hung out in the play center until an older boy taught Nolan how to jump off of something (is it wrong that I'm scared when my kids go to school full time and pick up things?) That little boy came up to me and said he was older and taught Nolan how to do it...I wanted to roll my eyes at him but just looked at Nolan and said not to do it again...after all, I guess Nolan probably teaches kids things they don't know... Like when we were at McDonald's play area the other day with my mom and sister and he was beating on the drums singing, " Boom clap, make you feel good, come on to me, come on to me now." As I'm running towards him in slow motion to lower his voice...Repeat. Repeat. My sister looked at me and laughed. I didn't look up to see what the other parents were doing but it was time to leave anyway. On the way home, the song came on the radio coincidentally and I "retaught" him the words, "Boom clap, make you feel good, come on let's see, come on let's see now." Hopefully it will stick?! I was trying not to laugh the whole time! I guess I should look for my children's CDs I have misplaced?!

Chicago: visits, birthdays and family pics

Back in November, we took a break from unpacking the house and headed up to one of our favorite cities to visit...Chicago!

We stayed at Ryan's sister and brother-n-law's house to celebrate two of their three boy's birthdays. On our way home, we stopped and had lunch downtown with one of my best friends (Aunt Jennifer) before Casey took our family pictures. A lot was accomplished this weekend to say the least!

We always have a lot of fun when we visit the Koehls! I love seeing the kids together as they get older and it's nice to just sit back and relax with everyone. Ronan and Keegan's birthday theme was a farm hoe down. I think my hubby got into it the most...

On our way back home, as we were headed into the city to eat and take pictures. The kids were arguing who would see the city first!? Ryan and I couldn't believe that they knew to look for the "tall" city and that they thought it would only appear out of one window! Maybe they remembered our trip we took in May?
"CogGo out my window!" "No, Chicago is out my window!"

When we got out of the elevator from the garage parking lot, Nolan said really loudly "this is amazin!" Everyone just looked at us and laughed! They were probably thinking he must not be a city kid if getting off of an elevator excites him! It was cold but we walked to millennium park cafe to eat and start pictures out there. Aunt Jennifer was already there and had drinks waiting...they did not have kids cups...not a good sign right? Would this be good practice for our kids to work on their behavior in restaurants!?

Hoping full bellies=great little models

Here are just a few of the pictures we took downtown. The kids were SO good and very entertained. More to come.

New Year's Eve

New Year's Eve at home with the kids.

I never really care what we do on NYE. It is fun to get dressed up and go to dinner but I love staying home too. We didn't have a babysitter so we stayed in with the kids and had a great time! As I have gotten older, the thought of lounging on the couch in sweat pants, ordering take out and having a glass of champagne while the kids play is very appealing to me!

I worked a half a day and I went to pick up the kids up at my parent's house. We ended up staying to eat before their NYE party started. Ryan cleaned to house and went to the store for us (love this) and we came home and had snacks while sipping on some champagne. Ryan got sparking kids champagne and boy were they excited! I'm pretty sure this was the highlight of their night:)

We decided to have a NYE party with the kids around 8:00pm and then put them to bed by 9:00pm because my sister and Seth were coming over to play Mexican Train. The kids would not go to bed and we decided to let them stay up and "crash" whenever...10pm-still up...11pm-still up...midnight-still up...12:30-Seth and Sara left. We layed down with them and they went to bed in no time! Can't believe they wouldn't fall asleep on the couch while watching a show while we played our game. Not sure we will try that approach for awhile! I think they are night owls like us:)

We are looking forward to what this year brings! Happy New Year!!!!!

A Very Merry Christmas

As the kids get older (Nora 2 & Nolan 3 1/2) and realize more and more what Christmas is and the traditions that we have, it gets to be more exciting for Ryan and I!
The kids had a blast and the excitement on their faces was the best present of all! Ryan turned to me on Christmas morning and said that's the most fun he has had with the kids!
They are getting to the age where everything to them is new and exciting. It was almost like they couldn't believe they got to do all of the special Christmas traditions; whether it was opening the advent calendar every morning for chocolate, singing/learning christmas songs, shopping, wrapping presents, decorating, watching christmas movies or finding elf every morning. Kids make Christmas magical! And yes, I did let them help out with all of the above...it took a little longer but it was fun to include them this year with all of the festivities!
Although I couldn't get them to go to the mall to see Santa, he made a surprise visit to Nolan's Christmas preschool party. He did get down from my arms to snatch a candy cane from him...progress!

Throughout the month of December, Ryan and I had a lot of "date nights" out going to Christmas parties and different holiday functions. It is always fun to get dressed up around the holidays and mingle with family and friends:)

A night out at the governor's mansion for a  Mini O'beirne Crisis Nursery fundraiser. I love everything about this charity! Ryan and I rasied $1000 to give to them that night! The holidays are always a good time to give and be thankful. Not to mention the gorgeous viewing of 31 Christmas trees!

Christmas Eve:

After Ryan got home from work on Christmas Eve, we decorated cookies for Santa before getting ready for dinner.

Christmas Eve at our new home!

I LOVE Christmas Eve...so magical with children. We go to my parent's house after mass (Nora was still getting over being sick so we didn't go this year...double ear infection and 103 temp the day before so we took it easy all day Christmas eve) and they do a nice lobster and prime rib dinner, open gifts by the fire, have a drink or two, kids played with their new toys. We looked for sanata on the way home (I remeber doing thus on the way home ffom my grandparent's house) and then set out cookies, milk and carrots for Santa and his reindeer.

This was probably Nolan's favorite gift! When he opened it, he said: "A rocket ship! It's what I wanted!" This was the first time he has ever said anything like that and really gotten into Christmas. So precious! Good one Uncle Cory!

We wrote a note to Santa...and he came!

 Christmas Day:

After gifts were opened, Ryan and I gave the kids our present...tablets! Our phones and tablet have been taking a beating so we decided this was a good move! We went back and forth but we are limiting the time and what they can watch. We also bought abcmouse.com and they are learning lots!

MoMo and BoBo stopped by to see the new toys on their way to my grandparents, which is where we were headed next!

Minus my cousin Jessie (holding Baby Rosie) the three great-grand kids. Ages 4 months, 3 1/2 and 2.

We always go to my mom's parent's house for Christmas day lunch. We take an annual picture before opening gifts after everyone eats. That picture goes on the calendar we make for our grandparents every year.

Ryan's mom's side of the family was our last stop of the day. The kids feel asleep on the way so I stayed in the car while they slept for awhile. We woke them to do gifts and I felt bad because they were ready to be done! They were cranky, wouldn't get in the pictures, didn't want to go to anyone but me:( I do not have as many pictures because of this!
With 11 grandchildren, this Christmas is always crazy and fun! Lots of cousins to play with (7 kids, ages 4 and under!)

We did end the night with some good ole fashion Christmas caroling at Ryan's aunt and uncle's house. Image 20 people showing in up on your front porch singing! Nolan got really onto it.

December 26th:

Ths  day after Christmas, the celebration continued! The kids were refreshed. It was my Dad's side of the family that we had Christmas with. It had been awhile since we had gotten together so it was nice to see everyone!

We had a very blessed Christmas and we were lucky to have lots of family to celebrate this holiday with!
